Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a major honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
